In the Kitano district in Kobe there are many "yokan"(洋馆), or Western-style manors, where the foreigners resided from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The manor with the red weathercock in the ijinkan (Western-manor) quarter of Kitano was built by Gottfried Thomas, a German trader living in Kobe, as his own home.

On my 4th visit to Kansai region, I went for a day trip in Kobe with my mother. Always thought that there's only Kobe beef in Kobe, but to my surprise its a really unique and beautiful city. With a good blend of modern, traditional Japanese and European architecture, stretch out from the mountain area to the coast. The vibe you get walking around Kobe is very different comparing to other Japan cities.
The Cockhouse is one of the more famous old western buildings in the Kitano district. The place feels like one of those cozy western style apartment I've seen in many movies. In fact it was used as shooting site for many Japanese drama and anime. Most of the interior and furniture were original and has been maintained well. There's also interesting exhibitions around the estate showing you how life was for the family that lived there. The souvenir shop has some pretty exquisite little gifts too. If you are going to Kobe this place is worth the trip and money.
